Google Play launches verification badges for VPN apps

In a move aimed at enhancing security and privacy for its users, Google has announced the launch of 'Verified' badges for selected VPN apps on the Google Play Store. This update is designed to make it easier for users to find reliable and secure VPN services, helping them make more informed decisions about the apps they use.

Criteria for Obtaining the Verification Badge

Google stated in an official blog post that apps carrying this badge adhere to strict standards related to user privacy and security. According to a report published by TechCrunch, developers who receive this badge must comply with Google Play’s security and safety guidelines and complete Level 2 of the Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA).

This assessment ensures that the app has undergone a double verification process concerning security standards, making it more trustworthy compared to non-badged applications.

Requirements for Obtaining the Verification Badge

To qualify for this badge, Google has set specific conditions and criteria, including:

  • The app must have at least 10,000 installs.
  • It must have at least 250 user reviews.
  • The app must be available on Google Play for at least 90 days.
  • It must comply with the targeted API level requirements for Google Play apps.

Easier Identification of Trusted Apps

Google emphasized that the new badge will help users easily identify apps that meet security and privacy standards. The badge will be displayed on the detail pages of eligible apps as well as in search results, providing trusted apps with greater visibility and reach among users.

Enhancing User Experience with New Interfaces

In addition to launching the verification badge, Google has introduced new interfaces on Google Play to showcase verified VPN apps. These updates aim to improve user experience and facilitate the discovery of the best VPN apps that comply with security standards.

Strengthening Security in the Google Play Store

This update is part of Google’s broader strategy to strengthen security on the Google Play Store. In May last year, the company introduced 'Government' labels to indicate official federal government apps, making it easier for users to distinguish between official and other applications.

With this new initiative, Google reaffirms its commitment to providing a safe user experience, ensuring a trustworthy digital environment that protects personal data and enhances security while browsing and using various applications.
